Sani Spoors: Unveiling the Underberg Area through Mountain Biking
Passionate Beginnings: At the core of Sani Spoors lies a group of local farmers deeply passionate about mountain biking and the captivating Underberg area they call home. Their vision is to share the natural beauty of the region with locals and riders from across the country. Nestled along the Umzimkulu River, surrounded by dairy farms, lush pastures, and the Ukhahlamba Mountains, Sani Spoors provides a spectacular setting for mountain biking enthusiasts.
Trail Creation and Coexistence: The farmers embarked on a journey over five years ago to create a network of trails on their working farms. These trails, designed for various skill levels, aim to allow riders to immerse themselves in the breathtaking surroundings while respecting and coexisting with ongoing farming operations. The symbiotic relationship between farming and mountain biking places responsibilities on both parties. Riders are required to sign an indemnity form and pay a fee, which contributes to the substantial maintenance of bridges and trails.
Sani Spoors Trails and The Olde Duck: The trails originate from The Olde Duck, situated approximately 7 kilometers outside Underberg on the Drakensberg Gardens road. This venue, previously known as the Duck and Dolittle and later the Duck and Spoors, serves as the base for all Sani Spoors and Riverlea trails. The Olde Duck offers an ablution block with comfortable change rooms, each equipped with a hot water shower, toilet, basin, mirror, and bench.
The venue also features The Olde Duck restaurant, providing a cozy setting with country-style service. Visitors can enjoy excellent cappuccinos and delectable food. The establishment caters to both indoor and outdoor seating preferences. For families, there’s an animal farm, a jungle gym, and a specially created kiddies track for biking.
Additionally, The Vanilla Rose gift and clothing shop on-site, curated by owners Jeannine and Di, offers unique and personally selected items sourced from around the country.
Sani Spoors Clubhouse and Social Activities: The Sani Spoors clubhouse, equipped with a bar, built-in braai, fireplace, and lounge, is utilized for social activities, often on Thursday evenings. It has witnessed numerous tales of adventures like the Tour de Tuli, Sani2c, Wine to Whales, and the Epic, shared over drinks. The clubhouse holds a special place for the community.
Activities and Access: Upon signing the mandatory indemnity form and paying the required fee at The Olde Duck or The Vanilla Rose, Sani Spoors trails are open to mountain bikers, trail runners, and walkers. Off-road motorbikes are strictly prohibited. The process involves obtaining a number board with emergency numbers for the ride.
The Vanilla Rose staff, particularly Hilda, assists with the indemnity form and fee payment during their operating hours. For those riding outside these hours, the responsibility lies with the individual to sign the form and pay the fee, with Zapper payment available.
In essence, Sani Spoors encapsulates the spirit of community, adventure, and appreciation for the natural wonders of the Underberg area, inviting enthusiasts to explore its trails and share in the beauty of the landscape.
